Escherichia coli detected in Bolzaneto dental clinic water supply
Escherichia coli contamination has been detected in the dental units at the Casa della Comunità in Bolzaneto, Genoa. The presence of the bacteria was identified during routine water quality inspections at the socio-sanitary facility.
The Azienda Tutela della Salute (Ats) Liguria has initiated emergency protocols, including the hyperchlorination of the internal water network and pipe flushing. As a precaution, the use of both hot and cold water has been prohibited for staff and patients. Further sampling and interventions on the dental equipment are planned to ensure the effectiveness of the sanitation and to monitor water quality before services can resume.
While regional authorities suggested the contamination might be linked to the municipal water supply, the exact origin remains unverified. The Ats has shared analysis results with the water utility Ireti and the Municipality of Genoa to facilitate investigations. The health agency noted that the presence of bacteria within this specific facility does not confirm contamination of the wider city water network.
