Escitalopram reduces PMDD symptoms in new study
A Swedish study published in the British Journal of Psychiatry has found that escitalopram, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), effectively reduces symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) when administered during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle.
Researchers, including author Manon Dubol, observed that a daily 20 mg dose of escitalopram significantly lowered irritability and anger. The study also noted a moderate reduction in aggressiveness. Using fMRI data, the research indicated lower neural reactivity to provocation during treatment, although changes in actual aggressive behavior during testing were not definitively altered.
PMDD is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome that occurs during the late luteal phase, characterized by intense emotional symptoms such as anxiety, depressed mood, and mood swings that can significantly disrupt daily life and well-being.
