Mexico environmental initiatives focus on reforestation and water basin restoration

Various Mexican states and municipal governments are launching large-scale environmental initiatives focused on reforestation and water basin restoration.

In Puebla, Governor Alejandro Armenta Mier has initiated a reforestation campaign in the Alto Atoyac Basin, aiming to plant 2 million trees by 2026 to protect water resources and recover forests. This effort includes collaboration with the National Water Commission (CONAGUA) to address river pollution. Similarly, in Tlaxcala, authorities conducted cleaning operations in the Atoyac River's Aquixtla ravine to remove solid waste and prevent flooding.

In Mexico City, Mayor Clara Brugada Molina has launched an urban reforestation program with a goal of planting one million trees by 2030. The strategy prioritizes eastern boroughs such as Iztapalapa and Iztacalco, which have fewer green spaces, aiming to capture carbon dioxide and mitigate heat island effects.

Additionally, the federal government and the State of Mexico have signed a coordination agreement for the ‘Senderos Seguros’ program. This initiative involves a 900 million peso investment to improve urban environments across 10 municipalities through better lighting, sidewalk rehabilitation, and street infrastructure.
