Felipe VI considers visit to Ceuta and Melilla amid migration crisis
King Felipe VI is considering a visit to the Spanish autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla, a move being closely monitored due to the social and political crisis following a significant migration event. On July 30, approximately 80,000 migrants entered Ceuta from Morocco, creating local instability.
Camilo Villarino, Chief of the King's Household, is tasked with coordinating the potential trip with the Spanish Government, specifically with Minister of the Presidency Félix Bolaños. Ceuta President Juan Jesús Vivas has indicated that the royal visit will take place 'when conditions allow.'
The visit is considered highly sensitive. A previous trip to these territories by King Juan Carlos I in 2007 resulted in Morocco withdrawing its ambassador from Madrid. The timing of any potential visit remains complicated by upcoming legislative elections in Morocco.
