E‑scooter safety initiatives and study underscore benefits and risks in Germany and Australia

The Police Department Aalen is organising six public information sessions in the Rems‑Murr‑Kreis during early August 2025. The events, held in Weinstadt, Waiblingen, Backnang, Winnenden, Schorndorf and Murrhardt, will explain the legal requirements for e‑scooter use, safe riding practices, technical aspects, tuning restrictions and special rules for child‑scooters, and include a simulator for hands‑on training.

A separate study by the Planning and Transport Research Centre (PATREC) at the University of Western Australia surveyed 249 private e‑scooter owners in Perth. Researchers found that e‑scooters shorten commute times, lower travel costs and serve as a “first‑ and last‑mile” link to public transport. Users span a wide age range, with notable uptake among people in their thirties and a significant minority over 55. The study also identified conflicts with pedestrians and cyclists and called for dedicated pathways and secure parking. It contrasts the Australian policy that allows e‑scooters on trains at any time with Germany’s fragmented, operator‑specific rules.
