Conceição Evaristo and Eliana Alves Cruz release “Escreviventes”

The literary duo Conceição Evaristo and Eliana Alves Cruz released the book Escreviventes with Pallas Editora during the 24th Festa Literária Internacional de Paraty (FLIP). The work stems from a two‑day recorded conversation held at Kaza 123, a quilombo‑urban community in Vila Isabel, Rio de Janeiro. Themes explored include literature, memory, racism, motherhood, ageing and friendship, and Evaristo emphasized “Nós estamos exercendo o direito à memória.”

Escreviventes opens the Memórias Brasileiras collection and precedes a documentary of the same name, directed by Estevão Ribeiro and slated for festival premieres in 2027. The launch is timed to coincide with the authors’ milestones – Evaristo will turn 80 and Alves Cruz 60 in 2026. Evaristo also explained the concept of “escrevivência,” quoting Pepetela: “Só escreve ficção quem conhece a realidade.” Alves Cruz highlighted the scarcity of documented histories of Black Brazilian intellectuals such as Lélia Gonzalez.
