Escuela N° 25 students reforest Los Alerces National Park

Students at Escuela N° 25 Delia Médici de Chayep in Villa Futalaufquen, located within Los Alerces National Park, have reforested the area with more than 32,000 trees through the Vivero Niños del Lago project. Established in 2006 following a forest fire, the initiative uses a service-learning model where students cultivate species such as radal, maitén, alerce, and cypress for up to four years before planting them in mountain trails.

Project leader Luis Almendra is scheduled to present the case at the 29th International Seminar on Service-Learning in Buenos Aires. While the project is supported by National Parks and the Latin American Center for Service-Learning (CLAYSS), the school currently faces infrastructure challenges. Following a heavy snowfall in 2022 that destroyed their protective structure, the community has raised only half of the 6 million pesos required to rebuild the necessary shade house for young seedlings.
