Escuintla authorities increase security after attacks on businesses
Guatemalan authorities have increased security measures in Escuintla following a series of armed attacks targeting commercial establishments. The National Civil Police (PNC) confirmed a recent shooting outside a shopping center in zone 1, though no injuries or fatalities were reported.
In response, the PNC, in coordination with the Guatemalan Army, has established containment perimeters and reinforced patrols in strategic areas, including zones 1, 3, and 5. Special police forces (DIFEP) are conducting motorized and foot patrols along commercial corridors and National Route 14 to protect businesses and residents.
Criminal investigation divisions (DEIC and DIPANDA), working alongside the Public Ministry, are currently analyzing surveillance footage, ballistic evidence, and social media content to identify the perpetrators. Authorities are also investigating intimidating messages linked to the attacks to dismantle the involved criminal structures. While security presence has been heightened at supermarkets and shopping plazas, no arrests have been reported as of yet.
