ESET warns of spyware risks to smartphone camera privacy

Cybersecurity firm ESET has issued warnings regarding the use of spyware and remote access tools that allow criminals to monitor smartphone cameras and view device screens.

Key indicators of a potential infection include unexpected camera activation, difficulty accessing the camera due to other apps using it, and the appearance of unknown photos or videos in the device gallery. Users should also monitor for physical signs such as overheating, rapid battery depletion, increased data usage, and general performance issues like slow operation or unexpected restarts.

To mitigate these risks, ESET recommends regularly reviewing app permissions, keeping operating systems and applications updated, and downloading software only from official stores. Users are advised to avoid jailbreaking or rooting devices, use strong authentication methods like biometric locks or secure PINs, and remain cautious of phishing attempts and public Wi-Fi networks.
