eSIM technology adoption grows through travel and digital integration

eSIM technology is transitioning from a niche feature to a more widely recognized mobile connectivity solution. While consumer awareness of eSIMs rose from 25% in 2021 to 60% in 2025, GSMA Intelligence reports that the technology accounted for only 5% of global smartphone connections by the end of 2025.

Travel serves as a primary driver for adoption. Many users find eSIMs practical for managing data roaming while abroad without needing to physically swap SIM cards. According to a GSMA survey across 11 countries, 51% of current eSIM users reported using the technology for leisure or personal travel in the previous year.

Technically, an eSIM is an integrated chip within a device that allows for digital configuration via QR codes, apps, or device settings. This eliminates the need for physical SIM trays and allows users to manage multiple lines or switch operators more easily through software.
