eSIM technology drives shift toward digital mobile connectivity
The mobile industry is seeing a significant shift toward eSIM (embedded Subscriber Identity Module) technology, which integrates digital connectivity directly into devices. This transition is evident in recent hardware trends, such as the removal of physical SIM slots in certain iPhone models.
While Apple has moved to an eSIM-only approach for the iPhone 18 Pro in the United States to optimize battery life and design, it has maintained physical SIM slots for the European market. In Japan, the transition has already occurred with the iPhone 17 series, which eliminated physical SIM cards and slots entirely.
Beyond smartphones, eSIM technology is expanding to smartwatches and providing practical solutions for international travelers, allowing users to manage multiple data plans digitally without swapping physical cards.
