eSIM technology faces consumer awareness gap amid market growth
The travel eSIM market is facing a significant growth opportunity driven by a gap in consumer awareness rather than a lack of demand. While hardware compatibility is expanding, a survey commissioned by Proximus Global and BICS revealed that only 33% of respondents in the US, UK, and China understood what an eSIM was, and 42% were unsure if their devices supported the technology.
As travelers increasingly rely on digital tools for navigation, banking, and transport, the industry must address consumer uncertainty regarding installation, activation, and compatibility with existing phone numbers. Moving beyond simple marketing about avoiding expensive roaming will be essential to closing this confidence gap.
Concurrently, the travel tech sector is seeing rapid expansion, particularly in the Asia Pacific region. The eSIM market in Asia Pacific was valued at over USD 1.3 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach nearly USD 4.8 billion by 2031, representing a compound annual growth rate of 20.5%. This growth presents infrastructure challenges for app developers, who must manage diverse user behaviors and regulatory complexities across different markets, such as the differing social media and referral dynamics found in Malaysia and Singapore.
