eSIM technology simplifies international travel while introducing new security risks

The adoption of eSIM technology is transforming how travelers access mobile internet abroad, eliminating the need to physically swap SIM cards. Unlike traditional physical SIMs, which require tools and carry the risk of losing the original card, eSIMs allow users to download digital profiles via QR codes or online activation before or during their trip.

However, experts warn of significant security and functional risks associated with low-cost eSIM providers. Cybersecurity concerns include potential data breaches, identity theft, and 'traffic routing' issues where data may pass through third-party countries or untrusted networks, potentially exposing metadata. In one reported case, a physician in India lost approximately 1.1 million TWD after scammers impersonated telecom customer service to steal account access via eSIM upgrade scams.

Travelers are advised to verify the service provider and understand how their data is routed. For high-security needs, such as accessing banking or corporate VPNs, experts recommend using original roaming services from domestic carriers rather than unverified third-party eSIMs.
