České Budějovice's Slavie cultural house renovation exceeds budget, new gastronomy concession announced
The historic Cultural House Slavie in České Budějovice saw its renovation cost rise to 1.055 billion CZK, roughly 400 million CZK above the original estimate. The overrun was linked to inadequate project preparation and the selection of an architect lacking experience with public heritage projects, prompting criticism from current city officials. Despite delays that threatened the loss of a grant from the National Recovery Plan, the city secured a 177 million CZK subsidy to complete the work, which added a glass extension and removed some earlier facilities.
Following the reconstruction, the municipal authorities relaunched a concession to operate a restaurant, café, two bars, and provide catering for events in the venue. The four‑year contract seeks a long‑term operator who can blend the building’s historic character with a modern gastronomic concept. Bids are accepted until 30 June 2026.
