Český Krumlov bears face potential relocation amid welfare concerns

Animal welfare initiatives Medvědí naděje and OBRAZ are launching a petition to relocate three bears—Marie Terezie, Vilém, and Polyxena—from the moat of the Český Krumlov castle to a modern sanctuary. Activists claim the bears exhibit stereotypical behaviors, such as walking in repetitive circles or nodding their heads, which may indicate long-term stress due to an environment that does not meet their natural needs.

Local authorities and the castle warden, Pavel Slavko, have contested the move, arguing that the bears receive excellent care and that the current enclosure, which includes a pond, waterfall, and rocks, is sufficient. This debate follows a 2024 announcement by the National Heritage Institute regarding the potential phase-out of bear keeping at state monuments by 2030, a move opposed by local leadership in Český Krumlov.
