Turkey court rulings issued in fatal child traffic accidents

Turkish courts have issued sentences following two separate fatal traffic accidents involving young children.

In Kocaeli's Gebze district, a school minibus driver, İsa Can, was sentenced to 5 years, 10 months, and 22 days in prison for the death of 6-year-old Ela Tabakoğlu. The accident occurred on February 4 when the student was struck by the vehicle while attempting to cross the road in front of Bilgi Primary School. Following the verdict, the court also lifted the defendant's house arrest.

In Eskişehir, legal proceedings are advancing against Fatoş Akıl Bilgesoy for the death of 3-year-old Elif Mavi Avli. The accident took place on September 3 when the driver struck the child and her mother, Merve Avli, at a junction. An indictment has been prepared seeking a prison sentence of between 2 and 15 years for "causing death and injury by negligence." Expert reports indicated the driver was 100% at fault, noting the child was dragged 14 meters by the vehicle.
