Eskişehir Osmangazi University unions call for merit-based rector appointment

As the term of Professor Dr. Kamil Çolak approaches its end, labor unions in Eskişehir are calling for merit-based leadership in the upcoming appointment of the new rector for Eskişehir Osmangazi University (ESOGÜ).

Representatives from Eğitim İş and Eğitim Sen have emphasized that the rectorate should not be used for political patronage or 'cadre-building.' They argue that universities must remain institutions of free thought and scientific production, independent of political influence. They stressed that academic advancement and administrative appointments should be based on scientific competence rather than personal connections.

Additionally, Hasan Hüseyin Köksal, the Eskişehir provincial president of Sağlık-Sen, expressed concerns regarding the influence of specific interest groups during the selection process. He advocated for a candidate with a medical background who is intimately familiar with both the university and the city of Eskişehir, suggesting that the new leader should prioritize the local needs of the institution and the community.
