Eskişehir tailor shifts to alterations due to declining fabric quality
Yaşar Kemal, a tailor in Eskişehir with 46 years of experience, has transitioned from sewing new garments to focusing exclusively on clothing alterations. Kemal stated that the decision stems from a significant decline in fabric quality in recent years.
He noted that modern fabrics, which are often composed of polyester or nylon, lack the structure and quality of materials used in the past. Kemal explained that because these new materials do not hold their shape well, he prefers to perform repairs—such as fixing zippers, mending tears, and adjusting hems—rather than creating new items that might dissatisfy customers. He remarked, “Rather than making a person unhappy with low-quality clothes, I prefer to make 200 people happy by doing alterations.”
