ESL Shipping integrates cybersecurity into fleet connectivity strategy

ESL Shipping is integrating vessel connectivity into its broader cybersecurity and IT risk management strategy. The Finnish shipowner is implementing a cybersecurity programme covering both information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) across its fleet.

This initiative is driven in part by the implementation of the EU NIS2 Directive in Finland, which requires enhanced protection for administrative and industrial environments, alongside mandatory incident reporting and board-level oversight. To support these goals, ESL Shipping is working toward ISO 27001 certification, aiming for full compliance by the end of 2026.

As part of its technical upgrades, the company recently completed a fleetwide installation of a multi-channel internet solution using LEO satellite connectivity and mobile networks to improve ship-to-shore data reliability and remote diagnostics.
