Esly Carvalho provides mental health aid to Venezuela earthquake victims
On National Volunteer Day, psychologist Esly Carvalho is highlighting the impact of mental health volunteerism in disaster zones. Based in Brasília, Carvalho uses her 45 years of experience to provide humanitarian aid, specifically focusing on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Carvalho has implemented a specialized intervention program in Venezuela following a June earthquake that killed over 6,000 people. Utilizing EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy, she provides online training and support. Her initiative has trained more than 100 local professionals, who have subsequently treated over 500 individuals.
The program addresses a critical shortage of specialized care in Venezuela, where only 17 therapists are reportedly specialists in trauma treatment. Local professionals, such as Caracas-based therapist Deglya Flores, have utilized these remote videoconferencing sessions to manage the psychological distress caused by the earthquake.
