ESM conducts first digital bond transaction via Pontes platform
The European Stability Mechanism (ESM), Deutsche Bundesbank, and Clearstream have completed the first digital bond issuance by a European supranational issuer settled through the Pontes platform. The transaction involves a €1 billion digital ESM benchmark bond.
Pontes serves as the Eurosystem platform for settling wholesale financial transactions using distributed ledger technology (DLT) directly in central bank money. This milestone marks the transition of Europe’s wholesale digital financial infrastructure from pilot phases to live deployment.
In this transaction, the Deutsche Bundesbank acted as the issuing and paying agent and was onboarded to Pontes as a market participant. Clearstream served as the Pontes Market DLT Operator, managing the bond on its D7 DLT tokenized securities platform. The settlement utilized a delivery-versus-payment (DvP) model, where the cash leg was settled via Pontes directly in TARGET (T2), the Eurosystem’s existing high-value payment infrastructure.
The issuance is designed to bridge digital technology with existing legal frameworks and market standards. The bond is expected to be listed on the Luxembourg Stock Exchange and will likely be eligible as collateral for monetary policy transactions in the Eurosystem, as well as at Eurex Clearing and Eurex Repo.
