ESO initiates storm compensation and accelerates grid upgrades in Lithuania

The Lithuanian electricity distribution operator, ESO, has begun accepting compensation claims from residents following a severe storm on August 22. Preliminary estimates suggest total payouts for direct losses and delays in power restoration will reach approximately 7 million EUR.

Direct loss compensation is available for private customers who experienced specific damages, such as spoiled food (up to 60 EUR), accommodation costs due to power outages (up to 60 EUR per day), or generator expenses. Additionally, automatic compensation will be provided to customers whose electricity supply was not restored within 72 hours. These payments will be funded from company profits and are not expected to impact customer tariffs.

In a separate effort to increase grid resilience, the Ministry of Energy has ordered ESO to accelerate the undergrounding of 10 kV power lines in the Lazdijai, Tauragė, and Jurbarkas districts. This project aims to reduce the risk of outages caused by natural disasters. The accelerated timeline targets completion by the end of 2027, providing more reliable electricity to thousands of residents and businesses in these strategically important regions.
