Espaillat siblings trial continues after Jet Set nightclub collapse
The trial of Antonio and Maribel Espaillat continues in Santo Domingo following the collapse of the Jet Set nightclub roof on April 8, 2025. The tragedy resulted in 236 deaths and over 180 injuries during a performance by singer Rubby Pérez.
Prosecutors have charged the Espaillat siblings with involuntary manslaughter and involuntary assault and injury. Expert testimony presented during the proceedings indicates that the structural failure was caused by an overload of the roof. Technical studies and testimony from officials, including Leonardo Reyes Madera of the National Office for Seismic Evaluation and Vulnerability of Infrastructure and Buildings (Onesvie), suggest the weight exceeded the design capacity.
Specific contributing factors identified include the installation of large-scale air conditioning equipment, water tanks, and a layer of mortar significantly thicker than originally specified in the building's design. Lawyers for the victims stated that these expert conclusions strengthen the case against the defendants regarding responsibilities held prior to the incident.
