Espinho corruption case: Verdict scheduled for December

The Espinho Court has scheduled the reading of the verdict for the Vórtex process on December 21, following four previous postponements. The case involves allegations of corruption, prevarication, abuse of power, and influence peddling related to real estate projects and urban licensing in Espinho, Portugal.

The investigation focuses on multi-million euro developments for multi-family buildings and hotel units allegedly processed to benefit specific economic operators. The proceedings involve two former mayors of Espinho, Miguel Reis and Pinto Moreira, along with six other individuals and five companies.

The legal action follows an operation in January 2023 that led to the detention of the then-mayor, Miguel Reis, and other officials. The Public Ministry filed charges against eight defendants and five companies in July 2023.
