ESPN reaches agreement for 24-team College Football Playoff expansion

ESPN and the College Football Playoff have reached a “handshake agreement” to implement a 24-team playoff format. This expansion follows an NCAA proposal to increase the field from 12 to 24 teams.

Financial details indicate that ESPN is reportedly set to pay an additional $345 million for the expanded playoff, a 26% increase over its current $1.3 billion annual payment. However, the net increase in new revenue is estimated at approximately $155 million per year. This is due to the elimination of conference championship games to secure the new inventory, which will result in rebates to broadcasters. For example, ESPN is expected to receive a $140 million rebate from conferences, and Fox is slated to receive about $50 million from the Big Ten due to the cancellation of its conference championship game.

The expansion has drawn criticism regarding its impact on the sport. Some argue the larger field may delegitimize the regular season by allowing teams with multiple losses to qualify for the postseason. Conversely, others suggest the format serves as an incentive for mid-tier programs to continue investing in competitive rosters.
