ESPN layoffs draw sharp criticism from former anchors and commentators

ESPN’s recent round of staff reductions has been condemned by former network personalities. Former SportsCenter anchor Linda Cohn called the layoff process “buffoonery,” saying ESPN’s public‑relations handling showed zero respect for affected employees, and criticized the way NFL analyst Ryan Clark was notified about his termination during a live broadcast.

Former ESPN contributor Will Cain, speaking on Fox News, argued the cuts reflect a strategy that rewards only a handful of talent who “move the needle” in ratings, YouTube views and social engagement. He noted that long‑time figures such as Karl Ravech, who spent 33 years with the network, were surprised by their exits, and suggested that the shrinking “middle class” of sports broadcasters will face increasing job insecurity.
