ESPN replaces College GameDay producer Jim Gaiero

ESPN is implementing a leadership change for its flagship college football program, College GameDay. Veteran producer Jim Gaiero is stepping down from his position after a decade with the show. He is expected to remain with the network, transitioning to roles involving Thursday night college football coverage and lead production for major golf events, including The Masters and the PGA Championship.

Matthew Garrett, ESPN’s vice president of production, is poised to take over as the executive producer for College GameDay. While some sources cite organizational needs and the desire to leverage Gaiero’s experience for larger events, reports suggest that friction between analyst Pat McAfee and the production team may have influenced the decision. Last fall, McAfee publicly criticized certain producers at the network during a social media rant, alluding to tensions with “old ESPN people.”
