Espoo and Vantaa initiate municipal co-operation negotiations

The city councils of Espoo and Vantaa have decided to initiate co-operation negotiations as part of efforts to balance municipal budgets.

In Espoo, the negotiations aim to achieve annual savings of up to 10 million euros in personnel costs, potentially involving up to 300 person-years of reduction. While direct teaching and early childhood education roles are largely excluded from cuts, approximately 1,000 employees may be affected by various measures. The process is scheduled to begin on September 2 and last at least six weeks.

Vantaa is seeking up to 15 million euros in personnel savings, with preliminary estimates suggesting up to 200 layoffs. Other measures, such as furloughs and part-time work, are also being considered. The negotiations will exclude approximately 5,500 employees performing statutory duties in schools, daycares, and educational institutions.
