Espoo proposes Finland's first zero-emission zones for trucks and vans

The city of Espoo has proposed the gradual introduction of zero-emission zones for trucks and vans as part of an updated climate roadmap. If implemented, these zones in the capital region would be the first of their kind in Finland.

While Espoo has already halved its greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990 levels—largely due to cleaner district heating—transportation remains a challenge. Trucks and vans account for approximately one-third of transport emissions in the Espoo area. Currently, the share of vans using sustainable fuels like electricity or biogas in the Uusimaa region is 5.4 percent, while for trucks it is 2.3 percent. Electric trucks represent less than one percent of the fleet in the region.

Espoo and Helsinki are jointly presenting this proposal to decision-makers. Beyond reducing emissions, city officials suggest these zones will improve public health and well-being by enhancing air quality and reducing noise pollution.
