Espoo: SDP candidate and campaign team targeted in violent attack

An SDP parliamentary election candidate and her campaign team were targets of a violent attack in Espoo over the weekend. Ella Immonen, an SDP candidate and Espoo city councilor, reported being subjected to harassment and threats, prompting her to file a police report.

Western Uusimaa police are investigating two separate incidents related to election activities in Espoo. In one instance, an unknown man allegedly shoved a candidate filming election materials, grabbed their clothing, used threatening language, and tore off a party pin. The suspect is also suspected of using racist language toward the photographer. The man is under investigation for minor assault and violating political freedoms.

SDP Chairman Antti Lindtman condemned the incident, stating that attacks on candidates and their teams constitute an attack on the fundamental principles of democracy. Lindtman expressed concern over the rising trend of hostile attitudes and aggressive rhetoric in politics, emphasizing that political disagreements should be resolved through discussion rather than violence.
