Esporte Clube Bahia launches domestic violence awareness campaign

Esporte Clube Bahia SAF, in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the agency Propeg, launched the ‘Terceiro Tempo’ campaign at Arena Fonte Nova to combat domestic violence.

Following a match between Bahia and Internacional, 180 women occupied the stadium stands to raise awareness during the ‘Agosto Lilás’ period. The initiative featured a prominent message: ‘Today, staying at the stadium is safer than being at home.’ The number of participants, 180, refers to Ligue 180, the national service for reporting and assisting victims of violence in Brazil.

The campaign was prompted by data from the Fórum Brasileiro de Segurança Pública’s ‘Football and Violence against Women’ study. The report indicates that on match days, threats against women increase by 27.4% and domestic violence bodily injury cases rise by 28.8%. For women aged 15 to 29, these figures increase by 44%. The study notes that while football is not the cause of violence, match days can intensify existing domestic tensions.
