Espírito Santo police seize 8.5 tons of irregular coffee
Authorities in Espírito Santo have seized over 8.5 tons of coffee from supermarkets in the Greater Vitória region due to serious irregularities. The operation, conducted by the Civil Police and the Specialized Consumer Defense Station (Decon), identified products with moisture levels exceeding legal limits and discrepancies between the actual weight and the weight declared on the packaging.
The irregular batch belongs to a coffee brand originating from Goiás, which has a significant commercial presence in the metropolitan area. Investigators noted that the excess water content artificially increased the package weight, resulting in financial loss for consumers and potential health risks, such as the development of fungi due to high humidity.
The seizure took place across various neighborhoods in Vitória and neighboring cities, including Vila Velha and Serra, following reports and routine inspections aimed at enforcing Ministry of Agriculture standards for coffee processing and labeling.
