Argentina: Judicial rulings impact municipal leaders and labor rights

Several judicial decisions in Argentina have addressed municipal and labor disputes. In Santa Cruz, the Superior Tribunal of Justice (TSJ) ruled to deduct wages from judicial employees who participated in strikes during July and August, a decision met with dissent from several judges.

In Río Negro, the Superior Tribunal of Justice annulled the suspension of Allen Mayor Marcelo Román. The court ruled that the City Council lacked the authority to suspend him based on a charge formulation, noting that the legal concept of 'prosecution' used by the council no longer exists under the current criminal procedural code. This ruling allows Román to potentially resume his duties.

In Chubut, a legal conflict persists between the municipalities of Esquel and Trevelin regarding the management of solid urban waste. Following a hearing before the Superior Tribunal of Justice, the dispute centers on an ordinance from Esquel that seeks to terminate a shared waste management agreement, prompting Trevelin to challenge its constitutionality to protect regional environmental rights.
