Esse Ejja indigenous community criticizes First Lady's aid visit
Leaders of the Esse Ejja indigenous community in Eyiyoquibo, San Buenaventura, have expressed indignation following a visit by Bolivian First Lady María Elena Urquidi. Community authorities, including Captain Jhonny Sossa, reported that the assistance provided did not address the population's most critical needs.
While the delegation delivered items such as toys, clothing, televisions, and mobile phones, leaders noted a lack of essential supplies including food, medicine, and medical personnel. A primary concern raised by the community is the mercury contamination affecting local water sources and fish, which poses a significant health threat to a population that relies heavily on fishing for subsistence.
Vice President Apolinar Campos also questioned the official narrative regarding the aid delivered and noted the use of high-end vehicles during the visit, suggesting the public image of the assistance did not reflect the reality on the ground.
