Essen approves redesign of Barbarossaplatz
The city of Essen has approved a major redesign of Barbarossaplatz, aiming to transform the currently paved, car-dominated area into a green, largely car-free central district space. The project includes the creation of a citizen forum, the Barbarossagarten with green spaces, and a promenade along Thomaskirche. Ecological improvements will feature soil de-sealing, additional greenery, and a water feature.
Infrastructure updates will focus on accessibility for public transport, adjusting main cycling routes, and improving pedestrian pathways. The plan will limit car parking to 67 spaces. Construction is slated to begin in early 2027 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2028.
The total estimated cost for the project is approximately 8.37 million euros, which includes 6.38 million euros for construction and 940,000 euros for engineering and planning. This figure is roughly 2.15 million euros higher than the initial estimate due to more detailed planning and requirements for lighting, traffic signals, and accessibility.
