Essen Green Party proposes new management for public grilling zones

The Green Party parliamentary group in Essen is advocating for practical solutions to manage the city’s public grilling zones. Through an amendment to a proposal by the CDU and SPD, the group seeks to ensure that pilot projects are thoroughly tested and financially supported while balancing environmental protection with the social importance of these spaces.

To address issues such as litter, noise, and overcrowding, the Greens propose investigating improved infrastructure, including booking systems and more effective controls. Rather than implementing blanket restrictions on group sizes, they suggest testing fixed capacities for individual grilling sites. They also emphasize that any potential fees or reservation systems must remain socially equitable and reject any restrictions that would limit access to Essen residents only.

Additionally, the party is calling for reliable toilet facilities and a systematic evaluation of these pilot projects following the 2027 grilling season. This evaluation would assess waste levels, complaints, and control efforts, as well as public acceptance and social accessibility.
