Germany grilling trends show meat dominance amid rising veggie interest

Data from the 2026 Grill Index reveals that meat remains the most popular choice for German consumers, with steaks and sausages accounting for 44.1 percent of clicks on grilling offers. Pork neck steak was identified as the most searched single product. However, vegetarian and vegan products show significant interest, making up 11 percent of clicks, and in some cities, veggie options outrank meat.

As the summer season progresses, authorities are addressing safety and regulatory concerns. In Dresden, officials conducted inspections to prevent illegal grilling and open fires in protected areas, issuing fines for violations. In Essen, new regulations are being considered to restrict begging near outdoor dining areas and to implement temporary grilling bans in zones with high vegetation fire risks.

Safety experts also warn against common grilling hazards, noting that approximately 4,000 grilling accidents occur annually in Germany. The use of flammable liquids like spiritus or gasoline to accelerate coals is highlighted as a major danger that can cause severe burns or wildfires during dry periods.
