Essen prisoner escape: Detainee had extensive criminal history

Following the violent escape of a detainee from a medical facility in Essen, the North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry of Justice has revealed that the individual has an extensive criminal history. The man was described as “erheblich, auch einschlägig vorbestraft” (significantly, also relevantly convicted) and had eight entries in the Federal Central Register as of March 2025.

His prior convictions include multiple offenses as a juvenile, theft, driving without a license, and violations of weapons and narcotics laws. He had also been sentenced to six years and six months for armed drug trafficking and twelve years and six months for narcotics violations, though some sentences were not final.

Regarding the escape itself, investigators believe the perpetrators may have brought their own keys to unlock the prisoner's shackles. The two JVA Essen employees accompanying the detainee to a radiological appointment were overpowered and restrained but were not physically injured. The officials had their restraint keys with them during the visit, and the perpetrators did not permanently seize the officers' weapons.
