Essen to host Light Festival and Lichtwochen in 2026

The city of Essen will host two major light art festivals in late 2026. The Essen Light Festival is scheduled to take place from October 2 to October 11, 2026. This event features interactive installations, light shows, projections, and video mappings by international artists at various public locations throughout the city center, including Burgplatz and Hirschlandplatz.

Following the festival, the 77th edition of the Essener Lichtwochen will begin, running from October 2026 through January 2027. Both events are held in public spaces, allowing visitors to view the installations free of charge. Installations are typically visible until 10:00 PM daily, with extended hours until 11:00 PM on Fridays and Saturdays.
