Essence Festival organizers consider relocating from New Orleans
Organizers of the Essence Festival of Culture are considering moving the annual event from New Orleans to other cities if a multi-year deal cannot be reached with local officials. Sundial Media & Technology Group, the festival's holding company, stated that they are in discussions with several potential host cities, including Atlanta, Houston, Philadelphia, Detroit, Baltimore, New York, and Nashville.
The uncertainty follows the expiration of a seven-year contract between Essence and the city in September. Negotiations have been complicated by financial concerns, specifically regarding unpaid vendors. Some businesses have reported significant outstanding debts, with one vendor claiming they are owed $500,000.
Kirk McDonald, CEO of Sundial, acknowledged the outstanding payment obligations but stated that the organization intends to compensate its partners. He noted that Essence has paid approximately $11 million to Louisiana partners for the 2026 festival and expressed a commitment to making all partners whole.
