Essendon appoints Mark McVeigh as new senior coach

Essendon Football Club has appointed Mark McVeigh as its new senior coach following a period of poor performance that saw the club secure its second wooden spoon in 93 years. McVeigh, a former player who made 232 appearances for the Bombers, brings extensive coaching experience from his time with the GWS Giants and Sydney.

The appointment has drawn scrutiny regarding the relationship between Essendon president Andrew Welsh and McVeigh. The two were former teammates and have personal ties, including serving in each other's wedding parties. Welsh has rejected allegations of nepotism, stating that McVeigh was recommended unanimously by an independent selection panel and subsequently approved by the board.

While club legend James Hird was considered a strong candidate for the role, he was not selected. Welsh noted that while Hird was overlooked for the senior coaching position, the club remains interested in involving him in some capacity.
