Essendon Football Club launches coaching search with James Hird among candidates
Essendon Football Club has begun the process to replace former senior coach Brad Scott, who was dismissed in May 2026 after a club‑record 17‑game losing streak. Interim coach Dean Solomon has led the side to a single win this season, leaving the Bombers at the bottom of the ladder.
The club surveyed senior players and staff to shape its coaching criteria, emphasizing connection, development and modernising the football program. Formal interviews with prospective candidates are set to start next week.
Former captain James Hird, who left the role in 2015 following the supplements scandal, has expressed interest and outlined a plan to revive the club. He is joined in the shortlist by a range of assistant coaches from other AFL clubs, including James Kelly, Hayden Skipworth, Dean Solomon, James Rahilly, Corey Enright, Daniel Giansiracusa, Brendon Lade and others. Legends Kevin Sheedy and former selection panel member have publicly backed Hird, noting his increased maturity.
Essendon officials have also been active in player recruitment, meeting with dual Brownlow‑medallist Lachie Neale as part of their rebuild efforts.
