Essendon Football Club sacks coach Brad Scott after disastrous start

Essendon Football Club terminated senior coach Brad Scott's contract on Tuesday, ending his tenure after 80 games and a run of just one win from eleven matches in the 2026 AFL season. The club cited a lack of progress and a need for a fresh voice, with president Andrew Welsh thanking Scott for his commitment before announcing interim coach Dean Solomon.

Midfielder Zach Merrett said he learned of the sacking from a member of the public and stressed that players must take ownership of the club’s “disastrous season,” adding that a sudden improvement solely because of the coaching change would be disappointing. Merrett also praised former club great James Hird as a mentor and noted Hird’s name is being floated as a potential replacement.

Former Bombers great Tim Watson and other club figures said there is a strong push among supporters and financiers for Hird to return as senior coach. While the board has not ruled anyone in or out, Welsh indicated the search will focus on the criteria for the next coach. The Dons sit 18th on the ladder, with a long injury list and only one win in their last 24 games.
