Essential goods prices rise in Salvador and Praia

Essential goods prices have seen increases in both Salvador, Brazil, and Praia, Cape Verde. In Salvador, the basic food basket rose by 3.64% in September 2026, reaching R$ 608.50. This increase was driven largely by significant price hikes in tomatoes (43.75%), cornmeal (34.48%), and potatoes (34.16%). The Superintendência de Estudos Econômicos e Sociais da Bahia (SEI) attributed these changes to weather conditions in producing regions, such as lower temperatures and rainfall, which affected crop maturation and harvesting.

In Praia, Cape Verde, the cost of essential goods and services increased by 991 escudos compared to June, according to the Association for Consumer Defense (ADECO). The estimated monthly cost for a healthy adult in Praia is now 34,570 escudos. Food products specifically rose by 6.3%. ADECO reports that this cost creates a deficit of 45% relative to the public sector minimum wage and 50.8% relative to the private sector minimum wage. Similar inflationary trends were noted in Sal and São Vicente, though to a lesser extent.
