Essex County Council leader updates 100-day plan and security measures

Essex County Council leader Peter Harris has provided an update on the administration’s 100-day plan, highlighting progress in infrastructure and community safety. The council has launched a pothole emergency campaign supported by a £7.5 million investment, which has reportedly increased repair rates by 60 per cent compared to the previous year.

In addition to infrastructure, the council is prioritizing special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) assessments. Harris announced plans for “Send pods” to be attached to schools to provide local support for families. Funding for these initiatives is expected to be redirected from savings identified through changes in Net Zero policies.

Addressing community safety concerns, Harris is launching “Operation Vanguard.” This initiative will fund private security guards in Braintree, Colchester, and Chelmsford to provide a visible presence in town centres. The move follows resident concerns regarding gatherings of male asylum seekers being bussed from the former RAF Wethersfield base to these locations. Harris described the security presence as a “positive and proportionate response” to community concerns.
