Essex dog‑cruelty cases result in bans, suspended sentences and hefty fines

Two animal‑welfare prosecutions in Essex have led to significant penalties. Daisy Lawson of Rayne was convicted at Lincoln Crown Court on 10 July 2024 of causing unnecessary suffering to her two‑year‑old pocket bully, Scrappy, which had been starved and left with untreated facial and neck injuries. She received a ten‑year ban on keeping dogs, a three‑year community order and 20 days of rehabilitation activity.

In a separate case, Charlotte Sutton, 26, operated an unlicensed home dog‑boarding service in Braintree. After she left the family pet Hero unattended on a hot day, the dog died in August 2024. At Chelmsford Magistrates' Court on 15 July 2024 she was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering and of running the business without a licence. Sutton received a 26‑week prison term suspended for two years, 150 hours of unpaid work, a £10,000 contribution to council prosecution costs and a £154 victim surcharge.
