Essex educational institutions tackle youth employability challenges

Educational institutions in Essex, including the University of Essex and Colchester Institute, are implementing strategies to help students navigate a challenging job market. This initiative was highlighted at BizzFest, a business networking event, in response to data from the Office for National Statistics showing UK job vacancies have fallen to a five-year low of approximately 707,000.

Economists and employers have cited rising operating costs, automation, and a lack of entry-level positions as significant barriers for young workers. To combat the “difficult loop” where employers demand experience that graduates lack, the University of Essex is focusing on increasing hands-on experience through placements and employer partnerships. James Fowler, the university’s MBA director, noted that providing opportunities for students to gain practical skills during their degrees is essential to making them more attractive to recruiters.
