Essex reports 102 cases of fraud by abuse of position

Data published by Report Fraud on behalf of the City of London Police reveals that 102 cases of 'fraud by abuse of position' were reported in Essex during the 2025/26 financial year. This type of crime involves individuals misusing a position of trust—such as family members, friends, or employees—to steal assets or money.

Nationally, the scale of the issue is significant, with £93.8 million stolen through this method in 2025/26 across 3,812 reported cases. Older populations are particularly targeted; victims aged 70 and above lost more than £51 million. Specifically, those aged 80 to 89 accounted for the highest number of cases, with losses totaling nearly £24 million.

Additional findings show that 764 reports involved the misuse of powers of attorney, leading to £34.6 million in losses. In some instances, fraudulent activity continued after a victim's death through the manipulation of wills or legal documents.
