Essity research highlights psychological impact of feminine hygiene in Italy

A study conducted by Essity in collaboration with AstraRicerche, titled ‘Gli italiani, l’igiene personale e l’igiene intima’, examines the relationship between Italian women and personal hygiene. The research emphasizes that physical changes from menarche to menopause are deeply intertwined with emotional well-being and self-perception.

Key findings indicate that 83.8% of women surveyed experienced discomfort during their menstrual cycle, primarily due to fear of staining (59.7%), perception of odors (41.1%), or public embarrassment (26%, rising to 39% among women aged 18-29).

The study also reveals a lack of professional consultation; only 14.5% of women consult medical specialists such as gynecologists or psychologists regarding these issues. Instead, 36.1% of women do not discuss hygiene insecurities with anyone, while others turn to partners (28.9%), relatives (40.9%), or friends (22.2%).
