Essonne suspends payments to CAF amid budget deficit
The Essonne department in France has temporarily suspended certain payments to the Caisse d'Allocations Familiales (CAF) due to significant budgetary pressures. This suspension involves the financial flow between the two institutions rather than the direct distribution of benefits to citizens.
Local authorities report a growing budget deficit, estimated at approximately 74 million euros. This crisis is driven by two main factors: a rise in RSA (revenu de solidarité active) expenditures and a decline in real estate tax revenues. While the 2026 budget initially allocated 207.4 million euros for RSA, current estimates suggest costs will reach 228.5 million euros. Simultaneously, revenues from property transfer duties (DMTO) are expected to fall to roughly 207 million euros, significantly lower than the projected 240 million euros.
Officials have stated that this measure has “no impact” on individual beneficiaries. The CAF remains responsible for calculating and distributing the RSA, and the rights, amounts, and payment dates for recipients remain unchanged.
